Black History month celebration
As an organisation looking to rewrite the narrative about what it means to work as consultants for minority led and female owned organisations and giving them the support to be able to create a world where there is equity from the top-down, it is especially important during October, the month dedicated to Black History Month, to be able to celebrate black owned businesses and honour the work.
The theme for this year's BHM is ‘Reclaiming Narratives’ - something which we wholly support and in doing so, are creating a future where the contribution from Black history is revered and rightly recognised.
BHM can be a date in the calendar which is often overlooked or worse, for some, a month which doesn’t mean anything because nothing societally changes and it can feel inauthentic to celebrate something for one month as though the issues don’t matter for the rest of the year.
We know in the UK, only 2.7% of all small and medium sized businesses are Black owned (source) and in that, over 50% of those businesses are located in London.
From this, Black women are 28% of entrepreneurs but they are 50% of the Black working population. More than a third (37%) of Black female business owners and 36% of female business owners from Asian and Other Ethnic Minority backgrounds report making no profit last year, compared to 15% of White female business owners (source).
Our mission to work with female and minority led businesses means that we get to hold our hands out and bring people with us. We are here to support and advocate for these businesses without pricey overheads or hidden fees. As the statistics show, it is too often these communities and their businesses that are overlooked and ultimately fail as they do not have the assistance required.
Part of our ethos at Hemisphere Consultants is to build a community. We believe that no one person is an island and we are stronger together. We want to build a community of trust, integrity and transparency. We want to say that we see you and are wanting to be your business partners to support the work you do not just during the month of October but throughout all the year.
